Can anyone give me advice as to how the culinary industry is in NC. My family and I want to move to the triangle area but am unable to get a job. I am an executive chef with 25 years experience. I have sent out thousands of resumes but hardly any call backs, is it because I'm from NY????

You can get chef jobs in the triangle area. Your just not going to get nearlly the same pay scale as in NY. If people request your salary during the initial response phase and it is high they will get scared away. Always mention that you understand the salary scale for NC and would be willing to work within it. PM me with your expectations, time line etc and I will give you a litle more info. I do have a few friends in the industry and some who are always looking for dedicated staff.

I doubt they aren't calling you back because you are from NY. Seems every other person I know here is from NY (or NJ)!

Have you tried the search engine Indeed.com? Great mega job search site which pulls from national job search sites as well as local ads & papers. You can set it up to send you daily alerts and use location parameters and/or keywords as your search criteria. Sometimes it is just a matter of getting your information to the employer quickly before they have someone else in place.

Good luck!

Bear in mind that the hotel industry experiences the ripple effects of what's going on in the corp world. So in this economy I am not seeing nearly as many hotel jobs as I used to.

I also doubt they'd care about you being from out of state as in the industry varied experience from other places is of value. As another poster said, be careful about the salary requirements. When you get to the level of experience you have, it might be a concern salary wise and, might also be intimidating for a younger manager to bring you in.

I'd contact local chef's associations in this area. Call them or call a nice hotel and talk with their exec chef and ask for career advice in making the move here. They might turn you on to something. If that doesn't work, call NACE, and ask for the same advice from a catering director.

Good luck!

I presently work for la arge corporate company making 90,000/year. My main expertise is in fine dining, country club, catering facilities. My wife and I definitely want to move and have decided to get our house ready for sale, but without a job, it's really scary. If I get a job in NC, I'm willing to rent and start right away, even if I don't sell my house in time. Basically, if I get a decent job offer, I'll take it. I understand the whole pay scale difference, and have kept this in mind when applying for jobs. I just haven't been able to get phone numbers and actually talk to people. I would appreciate any help you can give.
