For the folks who think it's about time they dismantled our public school system, our county is too large, that our ways here are archaic, not like where you come from, and those of you who are new to this community and are open to learning where we've been as a community, here is link from WCPSS outlining the history of the system 1976-2001.
WCPSS: From 1976 to 2001: Superintendent McNeal was here at the beginning (http://www.wcpss.net/history/mcneal/index.html - broken link)

I find interesting parallels between then and now - especially with regard to peoples emotions.

Those of you who want to dismantle our system without regard to where we've come from, after you've read this hopefully you'll appreciate our stance. Those of us who are natives or transplants who have lived here for decades or have raised children through the system, resist the "new board" wanting to change our system rather than refine it. School board chair Margiotti has gone on record as saying he'd dismantle the Magnet program if he could. It appears the costs are of concern to him. (I won't get into the $1.5M or so he's already wasted on a HS that he feels is in the wrong location).

The older I get, the more I am reminded by George Santayana -
"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

I always love your posts. And my 7th grade students were required to learn that quote in order to pass my class.

The magenet $ comes from FEDERAL grants so if you dismantle the magnet system there is no more $ coming into the rest of the system. Thus the recent statements of the board meant to comply with federal regs to get that grant $....

As to the Rolesville HS, I agree with that decision because putting 2 schools on one country road, over a graveyard, was lunacy. The former board just barrelled ahead. Better to undo it now before the mistake went any further.

Thank you! It's one of my favorite quotes which I think I first heard from my MS history teacher in the UK. I thought I understood it back then, but grow to appreciate it more so as I get older

That's a little bit of a self-congratulatory history. I'm not sure an outside observer/historian would characterize everything quite the same way. I'm not meaning to dump on it, I'm just skeptical by nature.

I saw the name McNeal and knew I didn't need to read beyond that...

Mr. McNeal taught me social studies at Carroll Jr. High.
I also remember Mr Farmer and Mr Hicks very well.
There is little doubt in my mind I am a better person for having gone through all that.

Johnny Farmer was my principal at Athens High in the 80's. He came to our 20th HS reunion last year! ( I know, I'm old!)
