Anyone know of any outdoor pools open to the public in the Hillsborough (where we live), NW Durham, or Mebane areas? We moved last year from out west, and we are convinced we will surely melt this summer without access to a pool! Thanks!
Public, outdoor pools are few and far between around here...private pools and neighborhood association pools steal the show. I wish you luck in your search. We ended up joining an inexpensive (relatively speaking) smallish membership pool in northern Durham called Homestead Heights. It's certainly nothing fancy, but it allows us to get our kids exposed to the water and escape the heat of summer.
On a related topic, just how necessary is pool access here in the summer? This will be our first summer in NC, so while I've heard it will be hot and humid, I don't have a good reference point for what exactly that means, although I'm sure it will be much warmer than where I'm used to (Michigan). I was looking into Homestead Heights and am inclined to join, but hubby who hates spending money that he doesn't have to, is unsure exactly how often we'd use the pool and whether or not it would be worth it.
Closest is New Hope Camp pool. Family membership is $380.
AD Clark pool is in Downtown Chapel Hill. Pool fees are $3/adult, $2 kid.
Meadowmont YMCA is nicest of bunch, Pool fees are $7.50/adult, $4 kid if you buy a 10 pack.

A pool can be nice to cool off, but really it's more about socializing or entertaining the kids. If it's not conveniently located right in your neighborhood and you're not otherwise really into it, it would not be money well spent.
