Actually, Ocean Isle FACES South, so "the further South" you go, you're going into the ocean I think you probably meant that the west end (to the right off the bridge) is less crowded, as the east end is where more houses are.

Headed to OIB myself, in a couple of weeks!

Yeah, you're right! Good catch. I knew that when I typed it but was trying to make it sound so simple but I guess I can't get away with anything here on CD.

I've never understood why they don't run some kind of public transportation to WB during the peak season. I mean, sure, you don't want families lugging their coolers, umbrellas, chairs, etc. etc. etc., but there are lots of us who travel lighter than that.

WAVE transit (city/county) proposed a public bus service to Wrightsville Beach around 2007-2008.

Wrightsville Beach aldermen shot it down. they cited "safety concerns" since the bus would have "nowhere to turn around".

Nevermind that Wrightsville Beach is one big loop, with a north and a south bridge.

the reality is that W.B. property owners are absentee rich folks from Raleigh and Charlotte who would prefer it if Wrightsville Beach were an exclusive resort. This is why it is called "Figure Eight without the gate."

Ha! Whoever called it that has either never been to Figure Eight or not spent much time on WB beach. We have a place at Wrigtsville and it is no where CLOSE to being like Figure 8....

it is a figure of speech to illustrate a certain mentality.

I stand by my position......I have been going to Wrightsville all my life and have been to Figure 8, there is no comparison....in look, feel or mentality. Figure 8 is a stuffy millionaires playground, Wrightsville is a place that I can walk to Buddy's in bare feet and get a beer and walk back home after, or sit on my front porch and listen to the people at the hotel down the street scream "yeehaw" all night, or watch the surfers skateboard down our street holding their surfboards. There is just no comparison. WB is a comfortable, relaxed, local beach....

It is not a figure of speech (i.e. simile, metaphor) it is just a thing people say.

I think you are missing the point of what the le roi said.

No, I didn't misinterpret her at all. She said that people who owned property in WB were "absentee rich folks that wanted WB to be an exclusive resort" like Figure 8. I don't know how else I could have interpreted that. I feel pretty strongly that that statement would give someone on this board who hasn't been to WB, a wrong impression of WB. I know it to be a laid back, down to earth, t-shirt, barefoot, surfer kinda place....nothing like Figure 8. There may be some rich people living there, as there are on any beach, but have never seen them trying to take it over, or even be in the majority, so I do not know what "mentality" she is referring to. I guess I think it was an unfair categorization and said so.
