I AM LIVING IN A LIBERAL AREA OF TEXAS AND WANTING TO MOVE TO NORTH CAROLINA. I MOVED FROM ATLANTA 6 MONTHS AGO AND REGRET THE MOVE. I WANTED TO LIVE IN A SMALLER CITY. ATLANTA IS SO OVERPOPULATED NOW. HOWEVER, THE WEATHER IS SO HOT AND HUMID HERE, NO HIKING , NO COOL BREEZE EVER, NO BEAUTIFUL EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, WOODPECKERS ETC. I AM A PROFESSIONAL AND OPENLY GAY. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT IT WOULD BE LIKE TO LIVE IN NORTH CAROLINA. I CONSIDERED MOVING TO CALIFORNIA BUT THAT WOULD NOT WORK FOR MY PARTNER. CAN ANYONE HELP?

i have a lot of gay friends and family members that live in different areas of NC, and everyone loves it. carrboro, which is a town right next to chapel hill, has an openly gay mayor. the triangle area, in my opinion, is very liberal. of course you have homophobic people everywhere, but i would say that the majority of the people here are open minded. maybe it's just because like i said, i am close with a lot of gay individuals and therefore, i don't see "the other side".

also, as for the outdoors, NC is the place to be. you have the mountains on one side, and the ocean on the other. it's perfect!

I am coming from mamof2's perspective as well. I know quite a few gay people and I have quite a few gay friends. Openly gay. Some are professionals and some are college students.....I have heard no issues from them regarding being unwelcomed or discrimination. The Raleigh area, is indeed, liberal, in my opinion. Perhaps it is because we have so many highly sought educational opportunities and because of that we have an influx of diverse people from all over the country and world. However, like mamof2 said, there will always be people that don't like people from another culture or lifestyle. Their loss - means more friends for me!!!

I grew up in Raleigh, now living in Clayton with my partner of six years. We have never experienced any problems. Durham & Chapel Hill have alot of openly gay couples, so does Raleigh. Asheville is where alot of the gay women live and there's a good mix in Wilmington. We have gay bars (Legends, CC's & The L Club in Raleigh along with Visions in Durham), a gay bookstore (White Rabbit) and several online forums you can join to meet locals.
Pride is coming up in September and I believe the Carolina gay & lesbian film festival is in August.

You probably won't have a problem with the people around here if you're gay, but you WILL have a problem IF YOUR SHOUTING ALL THE TIME!!!

Moving to North Carolina
My partner and I will be moving to North Carolina in the near future, from Spokane, WA.
I have concerns regarding the environment and climate, as I have almost year around allergies.
Allergies notwithstanding, I like to hike and enjoy the outdoors as much as possible. I would like to know if there are any gay hiking/outdoor groups in the Raleigh/Durham area.

Hi Wayne!
Yeah, I'm an allergy sufferer too! Blah. I actually bought a house that has tighter construction with cleaner air flow and believe it or not, my allergies have not been that bad this year. They also offer "shots" you can get now. My friend is doing them and she loves it.
There are quite a few gay groups on Meetup: World's largest community of local Meetups, clubs and groups!, not sure if there is one for gay hiking or not, but I do recommend just starting one yourself. At the gay bookstore (White Rabbit in downtown Raleigh) they have a bullentin board with all kinds of meetup ads. Umstead Park in Raleigh offers some excellent hiking.
Good luck!

Wayne, what are you allergic to? Grass pollen & ragweed? Pine? My husband is allergic to every kind of grass, but he's able to control it by taking Claritin for a couple of months a year. Hopefully you'll find a simple solution, too.
As for activities, Ferrcikhead offers some great ideas. I'd definitely follow her advice if I were you.

Many openly gay couples here w/o problems.
Stay out of the small towns, though.
