If you are picking figs for free, you are likely stealing them, as we don't have wild figs in this area. Go plant a tree in your yard and wait a couple years.
Freebies around here are blackberries and mulberries.
First of all, they are not ripe now....usually late summer. My tree only has tiny buds on it now.
And the above poster is right...I know of no "pick your own" figs. You just need to find a friend with a treet and they may let you. If the tree is big, many people are willing, cause it is hard to pick them all once they are ripe...before the birds get them.
Yes, plant a tree. Someone did in our yard 30 years or so ago. And now it produces 50 lbs of figs a season! They are not ready now, though, as was stated!
What for the sap, or whatever it is called (milky) stuff - it can cause skin iritaiton.
I posted this questions because we used to have two huge fig trees in our yard which unfortunately the previous homeowners planted much too close to the home's foundation (6 ft. away!) and in order preserve the structural integrity of our home we had to remove these beautiful trees. Our daughter was very sad because she was used to pick figs each morning throughout the summer. I remembered how MANY figs each tree would produce and that I was often inviting people over to come and pick as many figs as they could manage to withstand the heat to pick. This is why I thought there may be a few people in the area who had an overwhelming amount of figs (as we used to) and who might invite my daughter and I out to pick some.
The farmer's market sounds like the plan.
We don't plan to be in this house for as many years as it takes a tree to develop to the point of yeilding fruit.
Please send me a direct message if you live to close to Cary. I wouldn't mind having you out.
