Actually, I hear that the commute from Chapel Hill to Durham is much easier than traveling from Cary to Durham.

I am also moving from MA and wouldn't even look at homes in Wake county due to all of the school issues. They get 7000 new kids every year...Chapel Hill expects an increase of 250ish. I have high schoolers too and there is a new HS opening this year. I hope to have one of my sons transfer to that school since it will be smaller at opening. Even though we paid more for the type of home we wanted we are happy with the locale, the schools and our decision. We will be moving at the end of July. Hope you enjoy checking out Chapel Hill.

That depends on where in Oregon you are coming from. On my several visits to the Triangle over the years the traffic there has not seemed as bad as Portland. I've yet to see anything there compare to I-5 or 26 W.

And of course people move to Portland from LA and laugh at Portland's traffic. So it's all relative.

Fair enough -- it does depend on where you're coming from -- that's relative.

I'm just suggesting that they consider whether they will be with/against the commute, and to time the commute during rush hour (or their regular commute time). And to consider what growth in the area is likely to do to their commute over the next few years.

PDXmom -- when will the Ikea at PDX open?

I grew up in Louisiana and Maryland where its always really green.
Ahhh I'm loving the green, I'm actually breathless at times. I spent too long in the desert.

I'm back home now! Uneventful flight, unlike the one down on Thursday...

Anyway, if it comes to pass that we do make this move, it will be to Chapel Hill, not Cary and we will rent for a bit before buying. We've made many corporate relos and we've always just purchased a house. And though we've lucked out for the most part, even here in MA where the town and the schools have been outstanding, I think I might have preferred a different neighborhood (more kids) than the one in which we wound up. So I'm hoping there are as many available, livable rentals in CH as there seem to be in Cary.

Quite a 120k job We hate it so bad.No job in cary/raleigh money saved find one when i get there , kids come first not money rather have an condo in raleigh than our 4000sqft home in vegas.

It opens in July... right after I leave Portland. ARGH! A good friend of mine scored a friends and family pass to the pre-opening event too. I'm so bummed. I hear IKEA picked Charlotte over the Triangle for a store. I'm not a huge IKEA fan for furniture but do love them for the other housewares type stuff.

IKEA in July? GOOD!

Now that I have an NC house closing (July 3rd - YEAH! finalized the negotiations about four hours ago!) I have to schedule the corporate move from OR: no more duffle bags and air mattress in a 1 BR apt in Cary!

My goods are in Self-store in Corvallis, so I'll fly back there to load the Mayflower van in....August? It's the busy season so scheduling will be tight! But if I fly in a day early, I could shop at IKEA and put a couple o'things on the moving van....
