I need to have a deck inspected by a licensed professional engineer. It was already looked at by a home inspector. It now needs futher expertise. Any recommendations for a licensed PE? Thanks so much.
Your question interested me for two reasons: I am a PE in Michigan (haven't yet applied for comity with North Carolina) and; I haven't heard many requests for Residential PE services in Michigan. I do know that NC aggresively pursues sanctions against people and firms using the word "Engineer" in their titles, names, or description of services who are not licensed by the State. Based upon this I am not too surprised to read that inspections of residential properties by PE's may be required in NC.
Anyway........... a quick internet search of Raleigh area PE firms specializing in residential services revealed a number of companies, including Southern Engineers. This is not a recommendation, since I do not know anyone at Southern Engineers, but their web site lists all fees for this type of service. At least you now have a benchmark for what your services should cost.
Are you convinced that you need a NC Licensed Professional Engineer (PE)?
Sounds like a NC Licensed Home Inspector reported a potential problem and you wish to have a determination made as to the quality of the deck construction and or condition. Any NC Licensed Building or Residential Contractor who is competent should be able to make this determination.
The NC Residential Building Code is the starting point for guidance; however, many municipalities have ordinances that are more stringent than the Building Code (such as Cary).

True, but I believe there are some situations that require a PE to review (below snip from the Durham County website):
"Decks with post hights over 20'-0" shall be designed and sealed by a Professional Engineer or Architect."
