One thing I am finding funny is how so many intersections have 2 to 4 drug stores. How many do you people need? I guess I won't have any issue finding one open when I move there. How do they all stay in business?

We thought the same thing when we moved down here! I am not sure HOW they make money.

In addition, there is usually only one way in/out that is convenient because of all the concrete center islands at intersections.

Hmmm, maybe that's why there are so many???

I have heard that one of the chains will purposely buy a lot on an opposite corner from a competitor. It's part of their strategy. Don't know how accurate that is, but as you look around you tend to believe it!

Cary does too! I can't remember the last time that I went into a CVS, Walgreens, etc. I hate that they all seem to be free standing and not in a strip mall plaza near the grocery store or a Target. Who feels like getting back in the car and parking again?

It was weird when we visited CA and had to actively look for a drug store. It was actually somewhat annoying after having one on nearly every street corner here.

Yep. Walgreens did this on Guess Rd. in Durham and is doing it in Mebane too.

Drugstores and auto parts stores do this - one goes up, and the competitor follows across the street. Of course, gas stations and fast food restaurants have operated this way for years as well.

Walgreens and CVS are stupid and waste a fortune this way.

On Capital and New Hope Church there is a 24 hour CVS across from a 24 hour Walgreens. How stupid!

Why not separate them to give more access to off-hour service.

Retail companies have the brains of fleas and then try to shaft customers with higher prices to support their idiocy.

Guess what, Rite-Aid planned to open near the Walgreens/CVS combo. Guess they woke up. Construction was canceled leaving a bare lot at Capital and New Hope where Hardees used to stand.

Stupid from the consumer's perspective, I guess, but I have to imagine the corporations running these chains have a sense of how to place their stores in profitable locations. For the consumer, it would be nice if they were spread out more. But for the retailer, it seems the key is certain centralized, high-traffic areas. What suits one seems to suit several.

It's not unique to Raleigh. I've seen it in Northern Virginia too. However, it is not like that in Maryland (or at least not in our area of Maryland). I've always wondered if it has something to do with state health insurance laws regarding drug reimbursement.
