Our 5 month old son has a very noticeable flat spot forming on the back of his head. From the research I have done, I believe he has what is called "Positional Plagiocephaly" (A flat spot formed from sleeping on his back). Has anyone else ever experienced this with their infant? I have found a clinic in Charlotte (Cranial Technologies) that specializes in this area, but living in the Triangle, there must be somewhere closer!
Since it's pretty common, I am surprised your ped doesn't have a suggestion. If the place in Charlotte is the best, though, it might be worth it to go there if you can make it happen. Of course I don't know anything about your family situation.
our ped ordered an x-ray of our youngest when she was about 6 mos, he was worried that she might be having a similar issue. We were hoping for a second opinion since our ped didn't see it as an issue at his 4 month check up. Trying our best to keep him off his head during the day and put him to sleep on his side, but he just loves being on his back and the flat spot is getting worse. If Charlotte has the best, than that's where we'll go, but we figured there must be a great doctor in the Triangle with all these fantastic hospitals!
Our son had that somewhat and around 5 months or so he decided to flip and sleep on his belly and it self-corrected. He also had a nice little bald spot from it for a while! If you are very concerned at it will help assure you then take him to Charlotte for reassurance.
You don't need to go to Charlotte - you should look into UNC. They have a pediatric Cranio-facial plastic surgeon. Plagio is one of the things he specializes in. I can't remember his name but if I find it I will repost! Best of luck!
It's a common problem since the Back To Sleep campaign. Surgery isn't always necessary. Helmets can be worn to reshape the head. If it's mild a lot of baby wearing in a carrier or sling will help instead of a lot of time in an infant carseat or stroller.
You don't need to go to Charlotte. UNC and Duke have a craniofacial team.
Definitely do not go to Charlotte! UNC can handle it and will do a good job. If a helmet is what is decided upon you will need a local (to you) specialist as the adjustments to the helmet are quite frequent. Those things work fast on little, pliable, growing heads and you can't be driving to Charlotte all the time. My youngest was in one for 5 months and his lovely head is round as a ball now. Just perfect. Good luck!
