Has this winter been very warm in Rapid City? Unusually cold? Has there been much snow so far?
I've got about $7,000 saved up now (will have 9-10,000 soon), enough to get my foot in the door, so I was just wondering if it would be safer to move after March or if the weather has been calm enough that moving sooner might be worthwhile.
If you could move in the next 10 days, you would be safe! After that, it's anybody's guess. The weather has been unseasonably beautiful for December and so far, in January. Who knows where we will be at the end of the month! March is notoriously fickle, so if you are holding out for good weather, better shoot for mid to late May!
Weather wise, I would avoid February at all costs. Beginning of March can be nasty but not always, it's very unpredictable. April and May, as mentioned, is blizzard time. But the thing about the spring blizzards is they don't last long and the snow is usually melting in a day or two. It's the heavy snows in February that will stick and stay.
You didn't mention if you were going to be looking for work. I would think that if you are, end of March to the first of May would be a better time to start hitting the bricks finding a job. Rapid City is notorious for settling in for the winter. In other words, most business' have weeded out the employee's not needed for winter and they have a core crew and really don't hire as a rule. Of course, there are some that do, but not the norm. But when April hits, that's when the company's start gearing up for the summer business. Better shot at a job in April. Before then, jobs can be found, but it is more difficult and limited as far as fields are concerned.
Good luck, which ever you do. Keep us posted, we want to see how brave you are. lol

I do plan on finding a job. I'm 27 years old, white, male. By the time march/may roll around I'll have about $10,000-$11,000 to move with. Not a whole lot, but it should buy me a few months to look for a job or two, assuming the rent isn't terribly high, which it doesn't seem to be. Hopefully there will be some decent furnished apartments that I could find.
I'd prefer now to spring. Snow storms are fewer and farther between than the spring rains/snow storms that can last days. This time of year they rarely last more than 2 days which in the worse case would just mean postponing trip by a day or 2.
