I have been to South Dakota numerous times and have never had a bad visit. For the start of the Motorcycle Rally for 2012 we got a very nice rate for 4 nights at the Alex Johnson hotel. I know it is a older hotel but appears to be very nicely updated.

For any of the local folks or people who have stayed in the past we are just wondering if this is a nice hotel. We do like to park the motorcycle for the night and enjoy a drink or two and we have spent time at the Firehouse Brew place near by and always had good food.

We enjoy visiting with people but we are not high class type of people.

My parents stayed there this summer, and they really enjoyed it (and, for the record, my step-mom likes things "nice"). It is beautiful, and nicely appointed. The lobby area is gorgeous, there is a pub to relax in, and it's in the middle of the wonderful downtown area! Can't say anything bad about it - be sure to ask about the haunted room, though!

This sounds real encouraging. The web site makes the hotel look like it is very nice. I did read about the haunted room; the wife and I enjoy scouting out some of the ghost towns in the hills but we are not the ghost hunter types just more into the history behind the old towns.

The only thing with the Alex is parking. There is none close. I am guessing the make some sort of arrangements for parking... as in marathon running valets..

Downtown Rapid is a great place to spend some time. My wife and I love strolling about. There is a used book store just up the street from the Alex on St. Joe.

As fasr as ghost towns, you should have fun, several are way off the beaten path.
