I have found 4wd to be a useful safety feature in snow & ice. Is it worth the money??? Only if it keeps you out of a problem.
All weather tires have served me well.

My 4x4 is a 23 year old Ford Pickup. I usually weigh it down with firewood or sand or whatever ballast and I manage most of the time in 2 wheeled drive. Too much confidence usually results in getting majorly stuck.

But that can happen any time from late September through April when there's fairly fresh snow on the ground. Watching the forecast will give you a good indication of when major storms are coming through, but it's not so easy to predict highway closures due to winds and blowing snow.
Like WyoNewk, I come in as well for the games. With me I have the advantage of leaving a day or two earlier than other people as I stay with relatives. One thing I don't do is try to outrun a snowstorm. Where I'm at on I-70 it can be fine on the west end of the Eisenhower tunnel and have conditions go to hell when I hit Idaho Springs. Newk is right, check your forecasts. And Kbat has good advice here on the post below WyoNewk's.

Something to think about. In Wyoming, our Hiway Patrol drive rear wheel, 2 wheel drive vehicles and they are out on the highway even after it is closed so they can look for stranded motorists. They run good tires. They run rear wheel drive cars because they are better than front wheel drive.

2 wheel drive = 1 wheel, which ever can turn the easiest, has power. Some have limited slip that will alter that power to the wheel that can do the best job.

4 wheel drive = 1 wheel in front, one wheel in back, have power and they are on opposing corners.

All wheel drive = 1 wheel has power to the road, but it is computered controlled and the computer is going to make the best tire, the one with power and it can switch as any given instance. There are some OLD jeeps that had all wheel drive and they were trully, all 4 wheels pulling.

The advantage of All wheel drive is on roads and highways, when conditions cause tires to break loose, the computer is registering RPM, ground speed and wheel spin and if one breaks loose, it will figure out the best place to put power. All wheel drive is NOT for getting into nasty conditions thinking that you have a 4 wheel drive, because you don't.
