Danny, there are no Furniture Rows in the Sioux Falls/Omaha/Minneapolis/Des Moines areas. Omaha has Nebraska Furniture Mart (also in Kansas City). Slumberland and HOM Furniture are in Sioux Falls and Minneapolis areas. Unclaimed Freight/South Dakota Furniture Mart/Furniture Outlets USA are the big one in Sioux Falls and based there with stores in the Upper Midwest.

I would like to see a Red Robin in Sioux Falls along with a few other chains not found here. Bob Evans and Steak N Share are my two favs that are common areas south and east such as Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, and so on. If Sioux Falls gets one or both, boy would I be in hog heaven.

We do actually have a Furniture Row here in Omaha, and there are two in Des Moines. They actually have some pretty decent stuff most of the time.

I second Steak n Shake. Omaha doesn't even have one yet. St Joseph is about as it will get for a while, and it will be a while before they actually build there.

Not sure if this has been posted or not, but David's Bridal has signed a lease to open a 5,500 square foot store in this development according to Katz & Associates.

Are there any factories planned for construction in Rapid City?

Hmm... not that I know of. We have several large factories already. In fact, Fenske Media just added on to their huge complex so I think maybe they'd be doing pretty well. The cement plant is probably the largest plant that Rapid City has and they employ many people. There is also SCI which makes computer components and hard drives. What else... Lien and Sons has huge gravel quarries NW of Rapid City, you can see them driving along I-90.

Did you hear of any plans for new factories?

I understand that there was a meat packing plant in Rapid City that burned down 5-10 years ago. Federal Beef comes to my mind or something close and it employed 200-300 people and the owners chose not to rebuild.

My guess is that some manufacturing may come in due to the mine getting up and going and may stem from some of the research that would take place there and other industries and additional research that would feed off of the lab.

I work with some guys that go to SDSM&T. They say the new research lab is likely to bring pharmaceutical companies into the area.

Fenske Media is a major adhesive and paper products manufacturer in Rapid Valley. They mostly make shipping materials and adhesives found in packaging.

Danny, how are they going on the Rushmore Crossings development lately?

I know that this year sometime, ground will be broken for the first part of Dawley Farm Village with a good chance of a SuperTarget and Best Buy coming in, and possibly a Kohl's. These would be second locations. When this area gets going, it should take some pressure off of the Empire Mall area. Traffic in that area gets atrocious at times (it seems like if you can drive on 41st St., then you can drive anywhere else).

I would like to see a Borders come into Sioux Falls. We have Barnes & Noble, which is a nice store but a Borders would be a good addition. I have been to the Borders in Rapid a couple of times and found it to be nice. What is your opinion on Borders?
