Seriously looking at RC. My husband's eyes lit up when he saw you had great internet. Since he'd be working from home, we're wondering how frequently we should expect power outages during storms?
Thank you very much!
Outages are rare in Rapid proper. The valley some of the more rural areas might be slightly more frequent. The last blizzard, over Thanksgiving, the outlying areas were out for a few hours. The lights at my house flickered a half dozen times.
Transfer switches and generators can mitigate that. It is seemingly rare.

Thank you, that's encouraging to hear. My husband got permission to work remote recently and our lease where we currently live is up in April. I imagine it could be a challenging time to travel over with a U-Haul truck?
It is anyone’s guess in April. It ranges from nice days in the 50s and 60s to blizzard and feet of snow. Usually the storms are disruptive for short amounts of time.
I live outside of Rapid City about five miles to the west. Power goes out frequent enough that I am going to install a propane powered back up generator this coming summer. An alternative is a solar power system with a battery but the batteries are still pretty expensive. It is cheaper to buy a generator.
Ah... thanks for the assurance. We're narrowing down our search and will be on a visiting in person binge to a few places. I do know living somewhere is very different than being on vacation... we were only briefly in the area a few years ago and really loved it!
A visit would entail looking at apartments, checking out the local shops...
Any suggestions what we should check out or ask a local about? I might visit a real estate office... maybe they can help with rentals. Any insights welcome, thanks!

Sounds a lot like my brother's situation. He lives in a semi rural area with propane and septic outside of Redding, but the county was horrible getting power up after a rare heavy snowstorm. They usually get light snow and not even every year. It was crazy.
We have two "airports" so you might want to make sure you are not in the glide path or 30 degrees off either side of the end of the runways of either one. We have trains that come thru the center of town. You might check your work location VS your home location as you sometimes have to wait for the train to pass to get from one side to the other of the tracks. They close down I90 when the weather gets really bad. You should look for a place that is not dependent on the freeway to get from your house to town. Lastly, we have coyotes and cougars. If you have small dogs or cats you will want to be sure your yard is fenced and escape proof.
