I had put up a post recently with several questions in regards to life in the Rapid City area, and was very grateful to see the informative, well-thought out responses.
And now I have another question!
My wife works for a health plan here in the Boston area, and is involved with their IT, special projects and business. One of our concerns is what kind of work might be available around Rapid City that's similar. She is actually the main breadwinner in the family, so this would absolutely be important! My background provides more flexibility, having worked for a hockey team, and then getting involved with home repair/remodeling.
Just wondering if anybody might have insight on this...thanks again for all of your previous info!
Since Rapid City is the only good sized town/city for a few hundred miles in any direction, it has a fairly good sized regional hospital, called Rapid City Regional. The area is gaining population and is popular for retirees, so I would assume there would be some decent growth in health care jobs. However, I don't live there anymore, so some locals would have a better idea than I.
Rapid City is the major medical center for Western South Dakota, NE Wyoming, SE Montana, NW Nebraska, and SW North Dakota. The Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City employs over 3,000 people and the Regional Healthcare System employs nearly 10,000. If you look on their website they have all of the possible careers listed and it is very easy to apply!
Thanks for the info! My wife actually works for a health plan (insurance provider). For example, out here we have plans like Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Harvard Pilgrim, etc. Not a hospital specifically, but a system plan. I don't know if this makes much sense, but are there health insurance plans based in or around Rapid City?

Hmm... I don't think there are. I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Texas and I've never even lived there! Do you mean that she works for the company itself and doesn't work in a hospital at all?
If so, Assurant might be a company to look into. They have a major branch here and their company takes up an entire skyrise downtown. Other than that, we just have basic life insurance companies like American Family and Humana.
I'm thinking that you may be talking about an insurance headquarters. Is that correct? I don't have a website for you, but I have a toll free phone number and a So. Dak. phone number, but I'm hesitant to post it so I'll DM you. It's not quite a headquarters or anything, but there is a place in Rapid City where you call for pre-notifications of surgeries and stuff. I have no idea what the extent of services is there or of any employment opportunities, but you'll be able to find that out.
RCRH does have an insurance plan here based in Rapid as well - much like what you are talking about - it is called Wester Health - Welcome to Western Health they provide all of us hospital employees insurance as well as several other employers in the area! check the web site and maybe you can contact them re options!
OK, I found the website for the one I was referring to just after I posted and it's in the DM, but I'll post it here for future reference for others. They do have a contact office in RC and that's also in the DM. If anyone else ever needs it, just ask.
Baby is SOOO great... he's smiling and as cute as ever! Big sister is also loving life and we just bought a new home on Rapid so things are good Thanks for thinking of us!
