I ran across this thread by chance and brought back some memories. My family lived in Custer from 1990 to 1994. We would pack up in the car on most weekends and head into Rapid. I have a question. There used to be a store in Rapid, it was like a k-mart but was not k-mart. It wasn't any of the big named stores like Walmart or Target but it was similar to them. It wasn't in the mall. I can't really say what part of town it was in because I was only 12 years old at the time and didn't pay much attention to directions. It seems like it was pretty near to the road into town when coming from Custer. After reading some of the stories on here I remembered a funny incident that happened in that store but I couldn't remember the name of the store for the life of me.

Yeah, I think that might be the place. Thanks, that was driving me crazy. Anyway, when my family moved to the area when I was 12, we came from the inner city of Kansas City. My brother and I were classic city kids trying to figure out the rural life of hunting and fishing and so forth. We were in the sporting goods section of the store. My brother picked up this small bottle of something. It was labeled "Fox urine". Why would anyone want fox urine? we asked ourselves. My brother handed the bottle to me and out of curiosity I opened the lid to see what it smelled like. As soon as that lid came off, the worst smell that I had ever smelled filled my nose. I threw the bottle down on the floor as a reflex. The bottle shattered and the urine went all over the floor. Of course being 12 and 14 years old we didn't hang around, we took off. But I swear, that for the nearly 4 years that we spent in that area, every time we went into that store you could still smell the fox urine whenever you went to the sporting goods section, no matter how many times they cleaned the floor...lol

The Sands Motel, remember it well. That was my first job at age 13. My sister and her husband managed the motel. I just saw today they are doing work on the rooms on the right. The Sands sign is gone too.
Lived on 9th St., moved there in 1969 , have many memories. Went to school at Wilson, South Jr. High and at the old Central High.
Does anyone remember Woolsworth, Newburgers, or the Gamble's store down town RC, on St. Joe and Main St.? They were the only places to shop for clothes and items for the house, before Kmart even.
Also where Sears use to be on Main St, (across from the old fire station) there was a shoe store. We would go in the shoe store door, across from the Elks theater and come out the front of the Sears store. Straight through. In the winter...it could be a blessing. :-)
I remember Hall Inn, use to be 3.2 beer only. How about the Busted 5? Miners Camp?
