Hi all! I'm new to this website so I'm still learning how things work. I have a quick question for anyone living in Rapid City, SD. My husband has declared that we're moving next summer from Seattle to Rapid City. My concern is being able to find an accounting job online before moving. I've been searching to see what's out there and the best website I've found with info on Rapid City was this one (although it doesn't list any jobs). Can anyone help me feel good about being able to find a job in my field next year?

you'd probably do better searching for accountants online, then sending resumes. Here are some:
hotjobs.com
blackhillshelpwanted.com
rapidcityjournal.com
monster.com

The owner where I work said his wife (accountant CPA/controller) although a nearly lifelong resident has always found work easy to find (actually it finds her). I am 45 miles from Rapid in Deadwood. The office manager here said her daughter found work immediately in Rapid upon getting her license. I know thats not very specific but it is 2 witnesses to it not being too difficult. I would tell you otherwise if I had any of those stories which I don't... I have never used the help wanted ads around here to find work. Honestly I think the yellow pages work better. It doesn't limit oneself, and I tend to get jobs then for businesses willing to grow and accommodate my skills, instead of going to work for a place with a help wanted ad which can often (although not necessarily) be a signal of a desparate or short handed environment. In my opinion the more reputeable a business is the less likely they are going to need to place a classified.

It might be hard to find one online before you get here, just because of the economy, but in my opinion there has been decent turnaround in this area in the year I've been here. I think it depends on what level you are looking for. Are you a CPA, management level, public sector, private, healthcare, utility, etc? I have some experience with accounting jobs around here, and could probably direct you to some specific companies if I know where your experience is at. A GREAT place to look in general is the Department of Labor State job board - most of the larger companies post all of their jobs there, to comply with various federal non-discrimination laws. You can set up a search agent that will email you when new jobs post.

Or, you can sign up through this link - Dakota Roots - gives you pretty much the same job listing, but also puts you in contact with a live person. The job I currently have, I got because a employment specialist with the state sent me a random email, saying she had reviewed my information, and thought I would be a good fit for something she had posted that morning. I didn't get that job, but I did get more interested in that specific company, and was then able to track their jobs until I found something that I love.

Feel free to post more about what areas of accounting -AP, AR, fund, utility, personal, etc., and what level - data entry, analyst, management, and I can give you some good options, but overall, I think the chances are good - I was working within 60 days of moving into the state, in a full time job, with excellent pay for the area, and good solid benefits - I moved here in February 2008.

Excellent information from everyone so far. Thanks so much! As far as my experience goes, I'm not a licensed CPA (although my hubby wants me to go back to school for that...) but I do have a wealth of experience (11 years) as a staff accountant. I've done payroll, A/R, A/P, financials, banking transactions, and more little stuff. So far, I've worked for a transportation company and a Peterbilt dealership (both at corporate headquarters).

Finding jobs online is my biggest concern right now simply due to the economy. I was hoping to be able to network with a few people already living in the area to help speed my job search along. I know that it's early to be looking for jobs since it'll be a year before we actually move but I'd feel better knowing where to look when the time comes and maybe have a better idea of what kind of companies are actually located in the city.

luv_it_here - thanks so much for the Dakota Roots website. That was exactly what I was looking for in terms of job searching. I've already registered and will see how it goes from here on out.

Jammie - thanks for your website as well. I don't know why these are not showing up in the searches I've done on my own. If you knew my hubby as I do, he has to be the one to have the final say in the major areas of life. (He was the one who said we had to move to Seattle from North Dakota three years ago.)

I wish I had that kind of persuasion over my husband.

You probably already know this, but our economy isn't as bad as in the area you're coming from. We're not doing great by any means and we have slid, but there is still employment available here.

At least I don't have to warn you about the winter here since you have already lived where it's even colder. Haha
