My husband and I are wanting to relocate to Rapid city and we would like to know what the job opportunities are in ranching? We are horse people and would like to know about rodeos, powwows and horse trails. Are there warehouse job openings in this area? We are from indiana and have lived in Northern Wisconsin so we are used to the winters with lots of snow. What is an average winter in South Dakota?

I can't really provide and ranching or warehouse information, but I can tell you a little about Rapid City winters. They're a lot more mild than they are in Wisconsin, but still cold nonetheless. Rapid City doesn't get a lot of snow but the peaks just northwest of town get record amounts. Snow can start as late as mid December or, like this year, early October. January and February see the coldest temps (usually the teens) and March/April see the most snow due to spring blizzards. That snow usually melts very quickly.

There are ranching jobs around. Most of western South Dakota is ranching county. The pay is not great. But a hired hand job is needed.

There are a few warehouses and distribution centers around. Again SD job services would be good place to look for jobs.

Thank You for the information. We are planning to move to Rapid City early summer. What are the best months to relocate there?

Early summer is a great time to move. It's not too hot and all the attractions are open so you can really get to know Rapid City and the Black Hills.

It is cattle county. In and around rapid and hills there are quite a few horse people. The horse people its normally a hobby.

Your husband will fit in well.

Thank all of you for the info. There is only my husband and I but we would like to know if we could rent an apartment 2 bedroom that is nice for around 600 to 650 a month, and that is pet friendly. We have a cat. Will the employers consider you for a job if you tell them you just moved to Rapid city from another state? I am a warehouse worker that works in shipping dept. My husband would like to work on a cattle ranch. What would the pay be for a cattle rancher there?

Hiring someone new in town should not be that big an issue. Ranch hand wages might make $2,000 a month salary. Pay is not that great for ranch hands.
