In Rapid City, are there noise issues with the B-1 bombers from Ellsworth AFB? In Tucson we were never bothered much by the A-10's, but now the Air Force base has new fighters that are extremely loud. We are 15 miles from the base and it's still a problem. I don't imagine Rapid City Regional Airport is much of a problem due to limited number of flights. What about Sioux Falls and their airport? Thanks in advance.
I used to live just off the bottom of the runway at the base, back in the early 80's. Honestly, when you live around it on a regular basis, it's not something you notice. The only time I even remember taking notice of the planes coming in or taking off was when they brought in the big boys! I don't know how often (if at all) they fly C-5's into Ellsworth anymore. You get to the point where the B-1's don't even register, unless you *stop* hearing them!
I haven't noticed a lot of aircraft noise in Rapid City proper, and I pick up on stuff like that. A couple of weeks ago EAFB was doing mock bombing runs and they warned everyone in advance. Those B1s are so loud they make your ribcage vibrate and the windows rattle, but I only heard one maybe 2 or 3 times a day during that brief period. Now it's quiet again.
I would imagine that Rapid Valley near the airport and especially Box Elder would be quite a different story. There's actually a subdivision in Box Elder called Thunder Plains (their logo is a fighter jet, indicating that said thunder is of the mechanical rather than natural variety), which should give their prospective buyers a clue.

I'm with Kim - I was stationed at Travis for 14 years flying on C141s - the C5s were there too - hardly noticed any noise at all.
About the only thing that reached the level I would call loud for me, was when the F4s were brought in for air shows and would fly low-level over our barracks with us on top watching them - and they were LOUD - shook the ground under you and made you think the '06 earthquake was in progress again
Today my wife says I never hear anything she says - 'course maybe I have good reason for it and that's why nothing much seemed loud to me back then ...
I live on the base and while the planes are loud, I have to say that the 6:30 am Reveille and the 5:00 Anthem are way louder (insanely loud in the housing areas!). I really only hear the planes when they are flying at night or running engine tests on the flight line at night. Otherwise, it's not too bad. I've had C-17s taking off and landing over my house regularly so this is nothing compared to them.
I am about 3 miles away from the Pierre regional airport. I can hear the Northwest or Delta flight roll in and taxi at midnight if it still out.
