( I think) it depends on the individual...some people do better in a classroom setting with a teacher that can guide them and answer questions right then and there. I also know people that have done very well by taking an online class and passed the first time around. It just depends on the individual.
If you are a complete newbie, do the classroom thing. There can be a lot of non-book education there (war stories), questions answered, etc that makes it very valuable.
There are plenty of books you can read later about "war stories", or you can learn by talking to veteran agents you meet.
For pre-license, online is enough. The exam is easy, and the bar is set pretty low. All you need to do is pass.
I did the online route. I wouldn't waste time in classroom for pre-license.
