I don't know if this is even an issue, but I'd like to find out if this is an acceptable way to handle our situation:
My husband and I are retiring and are interested in two towns in the same state (Michigan) that are 100 miles apart.
We are going to the general area in May to see houses and make a decision. We have a real estate agent in Town #1.
Is it acceptable practice to find a different real estate agent in Town #2 and should I let Realtor #1 know about this? I'm pretty sure he's not going to want to travel 100 miles to show houses in a town that he's not based in and isn't familiar with.
Yes, you can have a 2nd agent. For example, I'm in Austin. I would never go up to Waco, which is 110 miles away, or to San Antonio which is about 80 miles away. Those are 2 very different markets and I would be doing my client a disservice by trying to fake it in the place I don't normally practice.

Agreed. Just let them both know you are looking in two different markets so they can decide if they want to take you on as a client.
Yes, it's fine to have two agents for two different areas. Just let them know that you're looking in two areas and haven't yet decided where you plan to buy.
If you need to sign an agency agreement, just be sure to restrict the included vicinity in some way, such as by town or county, or within 20 miles of zip code NNNNN. And of course, each agent should know that you have an agency with someone else in a different location.
Ask the first agent.
How big are these towns? In some areas small towns are covered by one agent or an agency will have agents for multiple towns. Communication and written agreements are important.
