I would get something like this

they are compact and have a windows 8.1 or 10 operationg system that lets you do everything your normal laptop at home does. They don't have a large hard drive, but you can add a micro SD card and they have usb ports for thumbdrives. They connect to regular wifi.
and yes a Chromebook/netbook should work.
It's kind of ipad size, but with full computer specs like keyboard, some are touchscreen now too.
I have an Asus eeebook in my living room connected to my flat screen tv. I didn't have a smart TV so now I have more than a smart tv.
When I was in the process of moving I used it for all my computing needs. I could watch tv online, use Chrome browser, I could print documents, I could add peripherals, etc. They have a mousepad, so you can cut and paste and move things easily too.
