this is particularly appalling:
Quote:
“In Brooklyn, huh? I don’t for sure,” Shaun Donovan, who previously served as housing secretary under President Barack Obama and housing commissioner under Mayor Michael Bloomberg, told The Times. “I would guess it is around $100,000.”
He also served in Housing under Clinton. This guy was the head of HUD under Obama.

We moved out of NYC 8 years ago. Houses - semi-detached to about 5 others - were going for 1/2 million then. These places were walking distance to the "train" station - Staten Island's answer to a subway and some of those houses backed up to the tracks.

We weren't interested in buying but just saw the advertised prices on signs.

LOL..100k? I don't know Brooklyn, but I'd guess at least 3 times that number for a median price.

What an ignorant pos. 100K is he freaking serious. Must have rented most of his life. But to be a "professional" housing what ever and not have a clue as to local house and housing cost is just plain stupid.

This shows why a lot of politician people like to throw money at problems like housing.

I think it's closer to 9x that number for a median price

The candidates tried to back peddle and claim that they were talking about assessed value for tax purposes, but even then they would have been far off.

Assessed value in NYC I can be way below market value. I think my parent’s house (that they’ve owned for 30+ years) in Queens now has a market value of about $800k - $900k. The assessed value is about $35k.

That's very lopsided, even for NYC standards! For context, my parents' Brooklyn townhouse has a market value of about $1.5 million, and an assessed value of about $600k.

I'm not familiar with the nuances of the NYC assessment methodology, but my parents' house doesn't appear to be much of an outlier in their neighborhood. I just randomly looked up the assessed values of a few similar houses in the neighborhood through the NYC.gov finance portal and they're all in the $30k-$40k range, while the market values are in the $700k-$900k range.
