My wife and I are looking for house to purchase this summer. We like Bowie, MD. However, I have noticed that the property taxes on the homes seem excessive for the price. An extreme example is:

Real estate listing for 15200 Dunleigh Drive Bowie MD - Home for Sale - MLS #PG7438190 - Realtor.com®

A $325,000 home with a property tax in excess of $10,000?

I looked up the home at:

Prince George's County, MD - Office of Finance : Property Tax Inquiry

It seems the previous owner received a Homeowners Tax Credit. My income will not allow me to use that credit.

Is this because the actual value of the house does not match the assessed value? Will I be able to get that adjusted?

Thanks in advance for any help.

If you're in the incorporated limits of Bowie you'll be paying both a County property tax and a City of Bowie property tax. Your County rate will be a bit lower than than in unincorporated areas due to a tax differential granted the city to offset its costs for performing services, such as police, that are otherwiswe handled by the County.

You will be eligible for the Homestead Tax Credit after occupying the house for a year.

I didn't do the math but at your price of $325K the combined taxes you mentioned look a bit high, County will be about 3200 and Bowie will be about 1500. You may also have special assessments for trash service and water/sewer capital improvements billed on your tax bill.

I would die for a tax rate like that.
