The cost of doing business is NOT just the salary for the worker. It's the cost to hire, train, manage, supervise, insure and bond that worker, plus the employer has to pay FICA, social security, unemployment, workman's comp, etc. It probably costs the employer TWICE what he's paying the employee.
I wouldn't hire a handyman to sand and refinish my floors. An inexperienced person can cause a lot of expensive damage with a floor sander. Get quotes from a floor refinishing contractor. Around here, we pay $2.75 - $3/sf sanded, stained and 2 topcoats. In SF it might be twice that much.

I agree, call a floor specialist & get a quote. Handymen are fine for some jobs, but an expensive floor is not one of them, imo. I would always call a specialist first & get a quote, & go from there, remember too, if they bid for the job, you don't have to worry about them milking the clock, as you do when you pay by the hour.
