Unless any restrictions are recorded on title in regards to the existing home, once the buyer is the new owner, he/she can do with their property as they see fit.
You're parent can either make a new offer, of can have someone else make an offer that allows for the contract to be assigned to a third party (them).
The sellers don't want it destroyed, but don't like it themselves enough to keep it or live in it. What a bunch of idiots. Yes I'll sell it to you, but only if I can decide in what way you will live in it.
This is basically what it boils down to.
My dad feels like the sellers may have second thoughts eventually, but my parents are already moving on to start looking at other properties. Their biggest issue is they feel like the sellers strung them along (again, it took about three weeks for them to finally shoot down the offer).
In my opinion their whole story was BS from the beginning! I'm guessing they don't care Bo Diddly squat about that house!!!
"We want someone to preserve the original look and design of the house" TRANSLATES TO: "We way overpriced it and want even more!" These seem to be greedy relatives who have and will continue to defy the advice of the market and their agent until the real in-fighting begins and then they will get far less than your parents offer.
FLW made some awesome houses to look at,however, like many architects: he may have forgotten or disregarded the existence of water and how it might affect a building!!!!

I'm not sure about that. I admit I'm getting this info second hand, but the impression I get is that there are a couple brothers in the family who are the elders and grew up in the house. Apparently they are very nostalgic about it and have their blinders on regarding the reality of the situation.
Yeah, I could be wrong, but, I still hold to my ( uninformed) prediction; I've seen this more than once..I guess we will never know. To dig myself in even deeper: I predict the brothers will fight. This is no small money for WI and money has brought out the worst out in people for all of human history.
Anyhow; sorry if I offended you personally!
House Movers. Surely you have them there. We have two local investors that specialize in moving old historic homes to other plots of land. They fix them and sell them. Sometimes old houses are in commercial districts that need to be moved, or old farmhouses get moved.
See if you have a local house mover that would buy the house (out here it is for $1 since moving it costs a lot of money). If so, reoffer the lower offer and agree to sell the house to a house mover.

Nope, not offended at all. I appreciate the different viewpoints. I agree that some family infighting could be inevitable. It's the sort of situation just screams, "Too many cooks in the kitchen."
As far as home movers, I have no idea. This deal isn't going down (at least in the near future), so there isn't much point in investigating.
When I first read the Maseman's post, I understood that the Sellers, the Buyers and both Realtors all got together in an attempt to negotiate a transaction. In re-reading his post, I see that he didn't say that is what happened at all. I'm curious whether it was your parents, Maseman, or their agent who spilled the beans to the Sellers.
Someone gave out way too much information that, even under the best of circumstances really had no upside for your parents. It sounds like your parents are lovely people. If the agent shared that info., then it really wasn't necessary and s/he should know better.
