How many acres would I need to live on in order to NOT hear my neighbors' conversations?

Are the neighbors hearing impaired? Do you have sensitive hearing? What's between the houses - hedges, open lawn, lotsa trees/forest? Sheesh, sounds like you need to be in Alaska.

The sounds of dogs barking can travel about a mile.

I have 140 and my neighbor down the hollow is always yelling at his kids. Then the guy across from him has his dogs out and they constantly bark.

It's not what you need, it's what they need, neighborly manners!

My new place is in Mid-town Phoenix (very urban), but the 6 foot high, block wall on three sides works wonders. It was nice of the guy to build it before WFC foreclosed on him, otherwise HD says 30 Dollars per linear foot.

Lived on 5 acres as a kid, pretty peaceful. Couldn't hear neighbors conversations for sure, but you could still hear the other kids when they were outside whooping and hollering.
Spent twenty years living on a postage stamp sized city lot where I could hear my neighbor flick his bic. Hated it.
Live on a half acre now, better, but I can still hear my neighbors conversations when they get boisterous. Thinking if I move again an acre or two would be good.

More is always better. I'm on a postage-sized lot in AZ right now. Moving to 1.67 wooded acres north of Atlanta in a few months. Can't wait. The way the house is positioned, along with the positioning of the other homes around me, I'll have a full acre between my house and any of my neighbors.

While I suspect I'll be able to hear loud conversation, overall, I think this much land will work just fine. Hope to never be on less than an acre again, for our primary residence.

We have 4.2 acres - neighbor on one side has a couple hundred and the home is in the middle. Neithbor on the other side is also the backside neighbor - he has more acres and his house is on the half that's closest to us - about 1/2 mile down the road. Neighbor across the street has a couple acres, have no idea where the house is - I know there is one, but haven't seen it.

Now, I'm the one who is severely hearing impaired even with hearing aids - but can't swim with the aids in - so, I wonder if we'll be hearing from the neighbors about us being too loud. And my kitties have learned to scratch instead of meowing, plus they aren't out at night, so until we get the guard dog, we have enough acres for our neighbors to be happy. <grin>

Is it really so horrible to hear the sound of another person or some barking dogs occasionally?

Depends on what you're looking for. From where I'm sitting right now - on that postage-sized lot where I can reach out my window and touch my neighbor's house...yeah - in my opinion, it really is so horrible. On the other hand, if I were in the middle of a couple hundred acres, as described by another poster in this thread, I might be thinking that it wouldn't be so bad.

My wife loves city living. She'd be perfectly content in a condo. I'd be perfectly content on my own mountain. Our "compromise" is our under 2 acre spread.
