We are not planning to list the house till early January given the holidays, but i have decided to place an AD on craigslist for the same. Is there some traction on craigslist for home purchases? We are using an agent for the listing.

What are some of the things I could possibly do to "get the word out there"? Thanks.

OMG grasshopper. I can't believe this isn't your first post. Craig's List?

Get a good RE agent. Pick your agent based upon their ability to "get the word out there." If your agent can't do this then get a different agent.

Flat rate MLS is waaay better than craigslist, but you have nothing to loose because craigslist is free. So give it a try, but dont expect anything, unless you get lucky.

Craigslist is excellent for some things -- baby items for instance. The problem with using it for things like real estate is that you get a COMPLETELY unfiltered mish-mash of "shoppers". Some folks will assume you are clueless and /or distressed seller and make some ridiculous low ball offer without attempting to make any legitimate valuation of your home. REALL A BAD IDEA!

In contrast MLS reaches a HIGHLY targeted group of both self qualified real estate agents and their clients.

Craigslist makes no claims as to ANY security measures to guard sellers from unqualified (and potential dangerous...) "shoppers".

Unless you want to "throw pearls before swine" I would recommend against putting info about your home on Craigslist.

LOL. Neither do realtors. Telling the office where to find your body in case you dont return is not good security. Unfortunately, the business is based on trust.

People are quite capable of selling their own house and using a lawyer for contracts. Yes, its a pain. And realtors shield you from this pain.

and sometimes, not

I also see the horrible pictures (or lack of) that realtors post on MLS and feel sorry for their clients... who are sometimes locked into agreement and can't escape until much later, effectively missing out a season of selling.
Makes me think that posting your own ad on Craigslist (to supplement), with your own thought-out description and pictures, at least can not hurt?

I've never seen a property listed for sale on CL that wasn't grossly over priced by an incompetent seller.

The sellers are looking for stupid buyers and the buyers are looking for sellers who need to sell yesterday for 10 cents on the dollar - and neither one exists.

Rentals is a different story. CL is the only game in town.
