I'm thinking of expanding our master bedroom reach-in closet by taking over our son's bedroom closet. To replace his closet, I was considering having a custom closet system wardrobe fixed to the wall. I contacted my local building inspector and they said as long as the closet structure is permanent, it would be legally defined as a bedroom. Would doing this closet change in a bedroom hurt the resale value of our home? Thanks.

Bottom line: Does your son's room still have a closet after it's all said and done?

Can't be any jerry-rigged closet either or else, it's not considered a bedroom any more.

How much floor space will this take away from his room? Really small bedrooms are not desirable for resale.

I think standard depth of custom wardrobe unit is 2'. My son's room is 10x12. Haven't thoroughly thought through the logistics of wardrobe size, but thinking maybe around 4' wide.
