I'm very happy where I live. I wouldn't mind having a bigger, newer house though! I'd also love to have a vacation house maybe on Cape Cod or in South Florida.
If I had to pick ONE place and money/work was no object: Pensacola FL
If I had the multiple house "problem," it would be:
- winter in Punta del Este, Uruguay (where it would be summer)
- spring in southern Italy
- summer in a Los Angeles suburb
- fall in southern Portugal
I'm very happy where I am right at this moment, although I worry about the possibility of increasing crime and hurricanes here in the future. So, a town of about 150,000 would be just right if it had no hurricanes, low crime, low cost of living, southern feel, an adequate hospital, and if it has some neighborhoods that are reasonably walkable.
Mayberry R.F.D. would be fine. Or Springfield, Missouri.
As for the house, I'd like a house that is very well maintained, and already nicely renovated or newer. No fixer for me, and a low maintenance yard (just grass, and I'll hire someone to mow). I have no idea about what size house I would want (1200-2500 sq ft?), though it would have three bedrooms, two baths, an attached garage, no stairs, and a huge, luxurious shower. The neighbors and neighborhood need to be extremely quiet, and I'd love at least 30' between houses as a sound buffer. There should be a grocery store within easy walking distance.
Pfft. I lived near San Luis Obispo, CA, and worked in the city for 3 years. While the scenery is amazing and feels like the ultimate idyllic place to live, I'll give my 2 cents and tell you it's not so great. It's economic survival depends on tourists and rich college students who blow money left and right. The bar scene is sad and full of drunks when Cal Poly students leave for the summer.
I do miss the nature hikes and the AMAZING beaches (Avila especially) also the wine tasting. But that's something I could do on a vacation.
I'd live in Europe. Specifically Ireland or Italy. Yes.
When you are looking at moving what are you looking for?
I am particularly interested in what you would look for if you were going to move a long ways away from where you are now?
The best way to look at this is with a hypothetical “if you could live anywhere what would you look for in the place that you are moving?”
I did just move, and this is what I wanted.
1. A better climate, more sun and less winter. I lived on a mountain and when ice would arrive we would be stuck there.
2. Less to pay in taxes. I knocked my taxes down from almost 6K to just $350. Now that is sweet!
3. I wanted to live near the ocean and now I am here.
4. Many friends our age who we could spend adventures with.

$350 in taxes: if you don't mind me asking, where do you live?
Close to other major cities(with 2-3 hour) train ride/drive
