Hello, I am thinking of upgrading the current carpeted floors of the main living spaces in my 900 sq ft one bedroom condo to laminate flooring. I have really been intrested in the darker colored laminate but am wondering if I should go for the lighter colors. I am concerned about resale and overall how the color of the floor will effect the space; will darker colored floor make it feel closed in? I am guessing that the lighter color is more neutral and will fit other peoples tastes better. What are your thoughts? Thank you!
I don't know your condo, but right now most of my buyers prefer the dark color. That doesn't mean everyone, and that doesn't mean the trend won't change. Get something you like for yourself.
I would go with a medium color. Dark color floors will definitely make the rooms look smaller and they will show dirt and scratches quite easily. If you're thinking of selling in the near future and you have an existing relationship with a real estate agent, you might want to ask them what buyers are currently looking for in your area.
I'm not sure what attitudes are about laminate flooring in your neck of the woods are, but I know a lot of my buyers will poo-poo laminate floors. You might want to consider some kind of pre-finished floating hardwood floor instead. Might cost a little extra, but will look better and appeal to more people.
Are laminate floors common in your area at the price point of this unit? I ask because laminate flooring is the kiss of death in my area, as it relates to resale.
Generally speaking, dark anything tends to show more dust than lighter colors. A lighter floor is more likely to make the space appear larger.
