I always tell my clients to get rid of anything that won't fit or they won't use in the new home. No point in paying to move it, then tossing it. So get to it!

There are service companies that market moving to the elderly - they will assess their current belongings, check out the next home, then recommend what to keep/toss and even supervise the setup and unpacking of everything. I plan to use that long before I'm elderly! Actually, I have an older couple moving from a 2000 sq ft home to a 1600 sq ft home. They are hiring my stager to help decide what to take and what to sell/donate before their move.

Hehe - that's my problem - we are moving from 4,000 sq ft to under 900 and I know I have to toss out 2/3 of everything. We aren't bringing much furniture - oh heck, it wouldn't all fit - just a few special antiques. My biggest problem right now is crystal. I collected it for years. We will not have a dedicated dining room so there's no point in dragging it all with me. As it is, I still have 3 boxes I never unpacked when I moved in here 15 years ago - ACK! some of it's special to me, so now I'm trying to figure out what I can get rid of that I've been using. Then there's my great-grandmother's china - no one seems to have room for it and I don't.

Craigs List! EBay! Wow that's a huge downsizing. Good luck with it. Rather than deciding what to get rid of, pick out what will fit and sell the rest.

Last time I moved, I found stuff I had forgotten I owned. Sold it or gave it away - if I hadn't missed it in 5 yrs, I didn't need it.

Yes, it's a huge downsizing. Craigslist is where I head first, then freecyle, freeshare, and lastly charity. It's still tough pulling stuff out of closets and picking one of 4 things to keep, 3 to go elsewhere - and it's slow.

Why the big downsize?

A really nice house less than 1/2 the size (and price) just went for sale near us. I had serious thoughts of making that move just to eliminate our mortgage.
