I'm looking for insight from people that know how to get a mortgage processor job. I have worked in banking for almost 6 years now. Almost two in opening new personal and business accounts over the phone plus servicing, a little over a year as a teller, 2 years in heloc and mortgage (servicing heloc, mortgage, and accepting mha program applications, then 6 months in a back office doing bankruptcy for mortgage loans) and now almost 5 months as an relationship banker (personal banker essentially).

I have wanted to go back to mortgage since I did a LOT with it. I was always learning new things. Working 3 different departments at once then doing bankruptcy after that. I want to be a Mortgage Processor and work my way up to Mortgage Underwriter. The only problem is that I don't know where to start or what I should do. Given my background, I do know banking, I do know a decent amount about mortgage (not all because I was obviously in servicing) and I'm willing to go out and get what I need (cert, education).

I only have my HS degree and no certifications. What is the best path for me? Where should I start and look to? I work in NYC and live in Queens so there are plenty of opportunities around me, I just want to understand where I should go and do. Thank you!

A lot of the jobs seem to require experience. I don't know if I have to be certified in order to work as a processor.

No certifications necessary. Sounds like you have a good background for it. There is a lot of demand right now due to volume, so many banks/mortgage lenders are hiring. Start applying asap. Good luck.

Your saying all mortgage processors start with mortgage loan processing experience?

6 years in a banking environment is a good/great base to work off of. I wouldn't hesitate to go for it skilldeadly.

Thanks guys! That's what I was saying, I have all the other parts. I have worked call centers, branches, back office. Everything among all different products. I'm sick of sales and want something where I can be organized and deal with stuff on the computer. It's just hard because everything says 2-3 years processing required, but how do I get the 2 - 3 years if there is no starting point! I will just start applying and see what happens!
