We are thinking of buying soon, probably around the first of the year. Will we have more negotiating power because it will be winter (I hear there's not a lot of action in the market during winter)? What about around the holidays?
Like every other market, real estate is regulated by supply and demand. Currently the supply is high. In the spring and summer demand picks up because families with children prefer to relocate during summer break, as not to disrupt their kids' school year. The Christmas holidays would seem a good time for a buyer to negotiate on the purchase of a home.
No one wants to move over the holidays unless they have no choice.
I used to think it was possible to do better in the Winter. Now I don't think it matters. The sellers have already been beaten into a bloody pulp and will do anything short of pay you to take their house. Who knows? There are probably a few who would pay you! Buy what you want when you are ready. As a buyer, you are in the catbird seat!
We're all just sitting around watching the value of our properties drop. Every one of those foreclosed properties that sell just drive our values lower. It would do my heart good just to SEE a buyer!
