To my knowledge and what I've been told about PEX from supply houses and the like is that PEX can actually withstand several freeze cycles (although not recommended) and not split or crack like copper would.
Pex is used all over where I live MT and I haven't heard a bunch of complaints. My house is copper becasue my plumber doesn't trust the Pex joints and connectors. At the point mine was done there wasn't a big cost difference between the two unless you did the Pex yourself, then it was cheaper.
