I live in the midwest and the back of our house faces south (north facing I guess), that's how I like it. We get lots of sun in the winter in the back wondows, where we spend most of our time. It warms our house in the areas we spend our time. It really depends where you have windows and where you want sun.

In snowy climates, don't have the driveway on the north (shady) side especially if it slopes. Otherwise, it depends on the terrain and climate. Also the view and amount of sunlight you want coming in the windows. Skylights might help in some cases. Sometimes you don't have much of a choice.

our new home is exactly like this the front side is facing south and little towards east and some small trees on the east side of the house.

I didn't check the direction of the house when I bought this house but when i go there in the morning i see sun light in the living room and then check google map an found that is little facing towards east for sun light.

But my back yard is towards north so may be little sun light there
