If the house is on mortgage, the documents are registered with local land registry agency. It becomes a matter of public record, they charge fee if you want to access this information.
Is there a way to find if a given house (not mine) has a mortgage on it?
By now, I hope you have determined that how you get this information varies depending on your location. Some information is available online, some is not. When seeking answers, it always helps to indicate where you are located.
I may be wrong but probably not. I am assuming the OP is trying to determine how much is owed on the property.
You can in many cases, dependent upon the location, search to see if there was a mortgage, you can in those locations also see if a satisfaction of mortgage was filed which would mean they paid off that mortgage.
What you will not be able to find is how much they still owe. The closer, title agency, etc. will send a request to the mortgage company to get a payoff before closing.
Does anyone know if Wake County NC has an online way to see if there is a mortgage on a house and how much is owed on the house? In the real estate records I can see how much was paid for the property, but nothing about a mortgage. I can also find the deed, but again no info on the mortgage.

It is easy to find out if there was a mortgage. The Deed of Trust has to be recorded with the Register of Deeds.
The Deed of Trust will tell you a lot of detail, original amount, and some of the terms.
Generally, you will only be able to tell if the loan is paid off, as a satisfaction or cancellation will also be recorded.
What you will not be able to tell is if the owner is current, if owner has paid additional principal, i.e., what the current balance is if the loan is not paid off.
But, it isn't hard to run an amortization and if the owner is paying by the book, come up with an approximate number, which really isn't worth a whole lot.

When I go to the Register of Deeds site for Wake County, and I search the Grantee by last name and first name, the only thing that shows up is the Deed, not the Deed of Trust.

The borrower is the Grantor. They grant the lien to the trustee of the deed of trust.

Ah! Now I see it. Thanks!
