I live in the Northeast and just decided I'm moving to Chicago in the summer. I'll be looking for small apartments. I've never done a move across the country like this before. What would be the best way to approach finding an apartment?
Don't rent anything sight unseen. When you decide to make your move, check into a motel for a couple of weeks until you get your bearings and decide which area best suits you for general convenience, work, ambiance, etc. If you have a lot of belongings you want to move, pack them into a "pod" and send for them later once you find the right place to live.
In the meantime you can start searching real estate ads, craigslist, etc. to learn current prices in different areas so you have at least an idea of what to expect when you get there. And of course read the Chicago forum here for information too.
Umm, there is a bit more country after you get to Chicago. But yes, you are moving a considerable distance.
You probably need to take a trip of a few days to find an apartment. Most cities have free publications with apartment listings. These will be mostly larger complexes but these will be easier to deal with anyway than individual owners. Sign a contract and put down a deposit. Since occupancy is rarely immediate you will then return to pack and then move your stuff.
Definitely do not rent sight unseen. You might call some realtors in the area and ask for recommendations on property management companies or buildings that are in the area where you will be working. I actually have 2 or3 very good friends (not realtors) in Chicago, if you want to DM me with your preferences I would be happy to pass that along to them and relay it to you.
When I moved from NJ to MO, I ended up getting a short-term rental sight-unseen after a lot of internet research. The place ended up being kind of yucky (mildew in the bathroom - GROSS), and very LOUD (train tracks right behind the complex!) but it was only a six month lease.
rational's suggestion is probably the best way to go IMO, if you have the ability to make the trip before actually moving. No matter how you do it, I recommend getting the shortest lease possible, because it's just so hard to tell if you will like the place or not, no matter what you do, until you actually live there.
Just like the others said, never rent sight unseen. I would call around and build a reputation with an apartment locator. That way when you vista they will be ready to show you some good properties.
Are there apartment locators in Chicago? There are a ton in Texas. That would be the way to go.
