Ask if you can have your closing docs emailed to you the night before so that you can read them after the kids go to bed. Then you can have an easy list with questions and whip through signing. Kids come all the time but I do encourage you to read your docs when it is quiet at home.
There are lots of ways to do this and minimize any inconvenience. And it really isn't a big deal.
Yes, it happens all the time for kids to be at settlement.
But it is also common for sellers to go to settlement before the buyers show, and to sign the few documents. Buyers do the heavy lifting at settlement. Sellers will do a lot less signing than buyers will. Maybe it takes 10 minutes.
Or, one of you could go and sign docs, while the other stays home with the kids, and then swap out.
Or, you could have a power of attorney for one while the other keeps the kids.
Like Silverfall says, maybe you can get the docs sent to you the day before for review.
However you work it out, it is all just part of the day.
