What do real estate brokers think of non-buyers who attend open houses "for fun", way beyond their price range, just to tour luxury or high-end properties? - do they frown upon that, or appreciate the potential future clients?

That is pretty typical of the average person that comes to an open house....no big deal to me

I think most Realtors know that there are more lookey loos than real buyers at an open house.

Personally I wouldn't do it unless I was either buying…or selling and I wanted to check the comps.

I would no trek through someone's house just for fun the same way I won't test drive a car for fun. I just think it is wrong to do, JMO even though I know many people do.

Better to attend the open houses of houses you can't afford than have some poor agent drive you around to tour them. Enjoy the free food. Most agents are happy to have you there.

I feel quite differently about vacant homes vs. occupied homes.

Vacant homes? Go for it.
Occupied homes, full of personal property? Not so much, unless you are interested in the property, or preparing to buy or sell a home.

I am addicted.
I have spreadsheet with 250 rows of houses in my neighborhood built in this century.
I want to see the inside of all of them.
The new ones are easy as I just walk in during construction.
The "old" ones, I wait for an open house.

To me its a waste of time. I had a gf who liked going to model homes for fun. I never cared for it so I didn't do it

Your thread reminds me of Marie in the Breaking Bad series who attended open houses, never intending to purchase the properties. She lied about herself and stole personal property from the homeowners. I was puzzled as to why a person would attend an open house who had no interest in the home.

My husband and I are planning on putting our home on the market in May.

Two weeks ago we went to an open house in a small town just outside the area we're moving to. All we wanted to do was familiarize ourselves with the local market, and peruse the small bedroom community since we were unfamiliar with it.

Actually this particular house was one hundred dollars below our usual "cut off" or starting point when we would run searches on properties, so we expected it to less house than we were interested in, but it looked pretty on the outside so we figured it would be good to see what goes for what price in an area we hadn't really looked at. The only reason it even showed up on our search was because we simply asked for all open houses in that area on that day and there it was.

We both walked in and stopped dead in our tracks in surprise.

The next day we made an offer on that house and now we're under contract!

So...ya never know. I'm sure that realtor house sitting didn't expect to sell the house that day.

No one does open houses for luxury properties in my area. Those are appointment only listings.

Neighbors, hobby open house attendees are all part of the package of holding an open house.
