Most states monitor sales to international buyers. For example:

shows, in detail, the nationalities buying in the state of Georgia. You can do a Google search, "International Real Estate Sales (insert state here) and get an idea of trends for a particular area.

A CIPS-certified agent (Certified International Property Specialist) will be very familiar with international buying and selling trends.

The OP asked about Chinese investors.

You supplied statistics regarding international buyers.

You DO know that many Chinese buyers are Americans right???

Do you have any stats that breakdown purchases by ethnicity? That would be helpful.

Default Anecdotal evidence

I have a friend looking for a place in Cambridge, Massachusetts who says most of the properties she looks at are being bought in all cash deals by Chinese Nationals. I have no actual evidence to support this assertion.

Also are there certain foreign ethnic groups that like to buy particular areas? I remember a few years ago, much of South Florida was being bought by wealthy Venezuelans? How is that trend going these days? Are wealthy Euros, Canadians, Brazilians, South Asians, and Mexicans buying RE in this country?
Yes, Vancouver and Toronto.

To me, Detroit seems like a poor area for investing. Unless the Chinese hope to buy it all and install some major industry there.

That's possible, I suppose. If you take away the unions and the political corruption, Detroit has a lot going for it as far as manufacturing goes.
