we recently had an excellent Realtor who showed us a lot of properties and did a great job. she spent a lot of time and energy for us and yet, we didn't end up buying anything, but not because any lack on her part. should we give her something or do something? like paying her a small fee, or a large gift? its seems like something should be done for her, we actually used her dad a while ago as well, and the same thing happened, we ended up not being able to buy anything at the time, but he also went through a lot of time and efforts to help us out. they are a sort of family friend..... I felt very rude, but obviously we couldn't just buy something!!?? what seem appropriate to do?

If you enjoy giving gifts, a gift from the heart is always welcome. But, don't feel that you are compelled to do anything. Again, it goes with the business.
The best way of saying Thank You is to send her referrals. Whenever possible.
In the meantime, if it makes you feel better, I'd suggest gift cards of some sort. I would normally suggest cash, but in this case, the broker is going to get a piece of the cash.
First of all, a gift isn't necessary but if you want to a gift card, gas card, or car wash certificates are always welcome.
Someone already mentioned sending referrals and that would be the best! Meanwhile, you could go on Trulia or one of the other sites and write a great review, and even send something to the agent with permission to post on her personal web site.

I would send a nice card. Maybe a small gift(like a $50 card to a restaurant. But as mentioned this is part of the business.
Yes, a large fee and a small gift, keeping in mind the fee will be split with her Broker according to her split. Her time is worth money.
Her time is not worth money. The successful result she causes is worth money, and since she didn't produce one, she doesn't get paid. Anything more than that is charity by the OP. That's the business. For some houses she might make $1000 an hour for some she might make 12 and for others she might make 0, that's the career she choose.

I think a generous gift certificate to an upscale restaurant is one of your best bets.
This expresses appreciation in a very thoughtful manner, AND she doesn't have to split a percentage of it with her broker
A gift card for dinner and a few well placed posts on facebook, your page and hers and maybe on yelp or anywhere else. I wouldn't highlight the endless looking without results (that would not be a favor), but I would marvel on her professionalism, knowledge and endless energy and be sure her contact info is included. When you send the gift card, send the links for your comments.
That's how you pay it back with class.
