Does anyone remember what happened to Antelope, OR? Rajneeshpuram - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ordinary folk have to get out of the way when a cult starts throwing its weight around.

Theres a *slight* possibility that the church leader(s) or someone in the church is using the tax free status of the church to flip houses without having to pay taxes. They could relatively easily bury the gains into the general fund using the poor bookkeeping that is typical of churches. All hypothetical of course but its still possible.

But since recognized religious organizations are exempt from filing tax returns with the IRS, does the accuracy of their bookkeeping really matter?

Not ALL income from religious groups is tax free. Technically income like this would be taxable as its not income from their "normal" operations. ie donations/tythes.

I had a friend whose sister lived in Antelope. He shared with me that his sister was very concerned, that the cult was trying to take over the County. I told him that they should take a deep breath, that with rare exception communes implode within a couple years.

Then Shree Ma Anand Sheela and a couple of her cohorts contaminated food at a local restaurant, people got sick. They were arrested. Their leader, the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, was arrested for immigration fraud and deported. The commune residents left.

The site is now owned by Young Life and operated as a family camp.
