I don't see a thread for this (not surprisingly) but, as a single childless woman approaching early retirement who wants to see the country, this sounds like an amazing option. Anyone out there?

I think they are called motor homes. Yes, they are readily available.
The tiny house format (at least the type I've seen on TV) doesn't seem very well suited to actual travel. They are certainly not aerodynamic so I can't see them holding up too well on the road. I'd think, if travel is your plan, you'd be much better off with a trailer type camper (like an Airstream, not a pop-up) or a regular RV. They come in all sizes and configs.

I'd focus on a series of short term furnished rentals and sub lets.
3-6 months IN A NICE TOWN somewhere.
Day trips in your small car exploring that area.
Then a 2-3 week road trip in that small car to the next nice town.
Rinse and repeat.
ZERO up front cash required.
If/when you find the spot that calls to you... buy your own little place.

Exactly. Those mini-homes are not designed for extended travel.
