Instead of inland in places like Kansas. You can get a house for almost no cost in certain areas of Kansas and other non coastal states. Try finding that deal in a coastal state. Will not happen, you will likely be spending well north of $1 million dollars to own a home in the coastal states. Especially in highly desireable areas. So my
question is even if one have a good cash flow why would someone willingly choose to live in a place like Boston when they could own a house for almost no cost and save more money in the Midwest states?

Because maybe they don't want to live in Kansas and would rather live along the East Coast.

Maybe their jobs are in those areas. Can't buy a house without some income or assets.

People choose to live where they want and pay the price for a home they feel is worth it to them.

Because I'd choke from being landlocked. I grew up in an area where I could be at the beach and see/smell the ocean in 20-30 minutes. I spent 7 years living 5-6 hours from the ocean, and the last 2 years were pure torture.

Because they could have more money but live miserably. There are tons of other reasons.

As a child, John Waters cried when Dorothy left Oz to return to dreary Kansas.

The East Coast (and Baltimore in particular) may not be Oz, but at least it's not Kansas.

Because they can afford to...?

I mean, seriously... What does Kansas have to offer that the east coast doesn't besides tornadoes?

Because the cities of the east cost usually have more to offer than the cities in the center of the country. Better job opportunities, great universities, art galleries and cultural attractions.

But you can save more money by not owning a home on the east coast if your yearly salary is less than $75,000.
