I didn't pack a single thing until after we closed. I didn't want to jinx myself.

I bought my house in cash. I wanted very much to buy, and the sellers wanted very much to sell. Still, l absolutely HATED that "up in the air" feeling where I couldn't arrange anything until the last minute! I can sympathize so much. My move was just 3 miles but it was still stressful. Here was my timeline for the house I bought this summer:

May 03: Offer accepted, and I began packing my 3 bedroom house which I did all by myself.
May 10: Home inspectors went over my new house, and when I wasn't following them around I was measuring details of the rooms, taking more photos, and going through a written list of 19 questions that I had about the house but couldn't remember the answer to. Inspectors found that the sellers needed to do $25,000 worth of plumbing repairs, among other things.
May 11-July 1: Spent spare moments drawing rooms on quadrille paper, figuring out where furniture could go
May 17: Finished packing except for the last two boxes (bedding, week's worth of clothes, etc). Too early! Essentially camping out at old house for a month and a half with nothing, miserable! Don't finish packing too early like I did.
Late May: got an estimate for home owners insurance and flood insurance on the new house
May 29: Closing date that got pushed back to June 26th later on (sellers changed it 5 times)
June 10: Touched bases with insurance and gave them info that they needed
June 15: Sellers finished getting $25,000 worth of plumbing work done that I required after inspections; with that done, my realtor finally gave me the "go ahead" to schedule my move.
June 15: Immediately I called the movers! Earliest moving date July 1st
June 16-26 sometime: Went into insurance and got the insurance nailed down; they were able to automatically deduct the money for all three policies (homeowners, wind and hail, and flood) from my checking account. Called gas, electric, water/sewage, and cable to arrange service at the new house after June 26.
June 20th: ordered refrigerator, washer, and dryer from Sears to be delivered ASAP after moving day.
June 26th: CLOSING - - paid in cash, no mortgage, pretty simple, got keys
June 27th-30th: Got cable internet working at the new house; turned out I needed a new cable modem because the old one broke (great timing, not! ugh) Did more exploring & measuring and such at the new house. Moved fragile things like antique marble table tops that the local moving company didn't want to handle. Also moved important papers, artwork, and other hand carry things in my SUV.
July 1st: MOVING DAY! Gave away "big chair" that would never fit, to the movers. Had them deliver guest bedroom furniture to my boyfriend's house since he wanted it.
July 3rd: Refrigerator delivered
July 6th: Washer & Dryer delivered
July-August: Handyman doing all the alterations/renovations that I needed to have done, such as keypad entries and a garage door opener, etc. Also bought new barstools which turned out to be all the new furniture I needed. Also I finished unpacking sometime in July and did all my change of address notifications.

No daycare, mortgage, etc, in my case, so this is the best I can do for you.

Hope this helps! And good luck to you.

Thank Nola for the break down on the entire process- it sucks but enjoy your new house & congrats on being able to pay cash- nothing like being mortgage free.

You're welcome! It was fun to look back on it and compile that timeline. Still, I am just so glad the process is over. May, June, and July were exhausting beyond belief for me. I'm not young, and it was harder than it was for me years ago.

Now I'm enjoying my new home a lot so it was worth it to me.
