My philosophy is that locks are a lot cheaper than deductibles and, if someone comes into your community with bad intent, making your place the hard target means they will probably move on. I would try, of course, to use a lock that is not obvious (if that is possible) but I'd still lock my stuff up.
Exactly. Ah, the fantasy of the "safe" neighborhood/city. So many people live with a delusion that "whatever crime could never happen here." But it can, and it does. And it likely will be eventually. Humans are the most dangerous animals on the planet. If your concerned about the safety of your items, by all means lock them up. If a burglar sees a home that will be difficult to break into vs. many homes which are easy to break into, they will most likely opt to burglarize the easy homes over your home. Failing that, you should have homeowner's insurance and/or an alarm system to protect your stuff.

I would welcome a burglar to come by and empty my garage. I didn't even make minimum wage the last (and final) time I had a garage sale.

I'm confused as to what "everyone else does" has to do with the right or smart thing to do.

I live in a really nice part of town. I still lock my doors (car, house, etc).

Every little thing you do to deter theft incrementally works against theft.

I think by "everyone else" he is thinking his garage would stand out and look like it had something of greater value padlocked where the others don't have those locks.

Still...I say better safe than sorry.

I live in a very safe neighborhood, with very little theft, but I have a tilt sensor on my garage door that is connected to the alarm system.
Most thefts from garages are thefts of opportunity; just like leaving packages in plain view in a vehicle over the holidays in a mall parking lot.
