I grew up in a house built in the 1930's. I never saw paint chips in the window sills and thought hey Pringles! I'll eat those. Not once. Miraculously, I didn't grow up with lead poisoning.....then again I didn't eat the paint!
I've lived in house built in the 1890's and never ate any paint in the place. I currently own a house built in 1942 that absolutely has lead paint under layers of paint. Again, I am not sitting here munching on the paint on the walls or wood trim.
I'm far more worried about the asbestos tape wrapped around my duct work in the basement!
Small kids put everything in their mouths, and can get lead poisoning just from not washing their hands before they eat. At the age it would have been the biggest problem, you'd have been too young to have any memory of eating paint.
It is also entirely possible that all the posters here claiming they never ate lead paint/grew up in an old house and never had an issue, also never had a blood lead test.

Wrong! My parents vacuumed the window sills every week because of the paint chips. We were also told to not touch the windows. Believe it or not, we actually listened to our parents. We endured beatings when we didn't.
All of my siblings had numerous blood tests as children for lead because our pediatrician was concerned since we lived in an old house. None of us had any health problems from it. Don't assume things.
Some people have proposed that the drop in violent crime over the last 30 years is due to the removal of lead from the environment, leading to less brain damage in children. Of course house paint is only part of it. Removing lead from gasoline was huge.
I've heard equally plausible theories correlating the drop in violent crime to the widespread legalization of abortion on demand with Roe v. Wade.

Never said my experience was the same as anyone else! I know lots of folks who have lived in homes built before 1978 and all the kids are fine. Not every kid sat there eating paint chips.

And many of them are not fine. They don't need to sit around eating paint chips to get lead poisoning, is my point. Just having it in the environment and not washing hands can be an issue. That's all I'm saying.
