'Where am I going to go?': Cancer sufferer, 97, is being evicted from the small home she has rented for 66 YEARS so landlord can cash in on booming million-dollar California property prices

The community of Burlingame, California is rallying around a 97-year-old cancer patient who faces eviction from the home she has lived in for nearly seven decades.
Marie Hatch, 97, says she first moved into her home 66 years ago when her friend Vivian Kruse owned the cozy cottage.

Hatch claims Kruse gave her a verbal promise that she could live in the home until she died - a promise that was guaranteed by Kruse's daughter and then granddaughter.
But after Kruse's granddaughter died in 2006, her husband took control of the home and now he is pushing to sell the property.

Hatch and her 85-year-old roommate Georgia Rothrock were served with eviction papers on February 11, giving them 60 days to vacate the property.

That's awful, I hope the community rallies around her and finds her and her roommate a place to live.

This is exactly what life estates are for.

It sounds like the guy inadvertently got caught in a legal mess when his estranged wife was murdered.

How is the community rallying behind her? Are they going to buy a house and rent it to her at 30% of the normal rent? Are any of the posters that are calling the owner greedy willing to do the same?

I am sure both of them could get into a senior apartment.

This is terrible...however, I can't help but think about how much better off she would have been had she purchased the house instead of renting it for 66 years!

I hope so, but some cities don't have affordable senior housing and if they do the wait list is probably full.

Honestly, I can understand both sides of this. The current landlord is the widower of the GRANDDAUGHTER of the original landlord. He may not want to be a landlord at all. Plus, he says the trust expires in July, and it is a lot of legal work and expense to set up a new trust to transfer the properties into.

When my parents pass away, I expect I will inherit multiple rental properties, as they own quite a few. I have no interest in being a landlord myself, so I will definitely sell the properties. I will feel bad if some of the tenants don't want to move, but not bad enough to keep the properties that I don't want to own.

Secondly, if I was going to rent a house, I sure wouldn't want to rent it out at 28% of current rent value. To expect any landlord to do that is just a sense of entitlement.

So I would feel bad for the women, but they wouldn't stop me from selling the house if I were in this position. I was going to say I would probably give them some money to move, but by only charging them 28% of rent value, the landlord has been "giving them money" for decades. I still might, but that would be a factor.

You make very good points, especially as how the poor lady has had a major break on her rent for decades. I suspect that when this woman was 33 years old and first rented the home, no one expected her to be there for 66 years!!
